New Routine in London

So I am in London now and it’s been great! A whole different experience when comparing to the time I actually lived here…

I arrived to YHA on the Saturday the 7^th by 11pm and it was an adventure to find my booking.  And I’ll let you know the story from when it all started…

I am finishing my degree at the moment. I undertook it in a Portuguese university but needed to complete two internships, one of which I really wanted to do internationally. So I searched for many many companies both in London and across the entire country to further develop my working experience in the fields of marketing and/or events. I ended up finding Contraband – an entertainment agency working for events, based in north London – and thought I had to work there! Therefore, I e-mailed them asking an internship placement for the summer of 2013. Since they didn’t have any availability to fulfil my request I ended up doing my first internship in Madeira island (which was equally great and very productive professional wise!) and agreed to do the next with them.

So here I come! But since this is an unpaid placement and London is indeed a quite expensive city in all aspects, I had to find a way to survive without spending too much money. What else should I do other than acting like the real traveller that I like to be and trying to find an hostel to work for in exchange for accommodation… J I e-mailed all the hostels in London explaining my proposal and I heard back from YHA, which is a Youth Hostels Association working all over the UK. I had a skype interview et voila…!

So my routine for 3 months is going to be based on my full-time internship at Contraband and my part-time job at the YHA London Central, in Great Portland Street (it is, indeed, very very central!!).

Living in an hostel as on permanent is quite weird, I've gotta say. But it awesome!! A completely different experience from being in an hostel as a backpacker for example. I need to be careful about everything, since I am working there and also want to keep my "home" nice and tight :P On the other hand, there's the room share with three other girls everyday. At the moment I have 2 interns staying long-term in my room as well so it feels a bit more private and safe... but there's always this forth person who's a guest and changes nearly everyday! Anyway, the hostel environment is really really worth experiencing and bring up some amazing stories to keep forever.

NOVA ROTINA EM LONDRES

Agora estou em Londres e tem sido optimo! Uma experiencia completamente diferente daquela que tive quando aqui vivi, ha uns tempos atras…

Cheguei ao YHA no sabado, dia 7, por volta das 23:00h e encontrar o meu nome na lista de reservas foi por si so uma aventura! Mas vou explicar-vos melhor o que se passa…

Neste momento – e thank God! – estou a chegar ao fim da minha licenciatura. Estava a estudar em Portugal mas precisava de fazer dois estagios e sabia que, pelo menos um deles, queria fazer fora do pais. Por isso pus-me a pesquisa imeeeenso por empresas, tanto em Londres como noutros destinos, onde pudesse aprender mais sobre eventos e marketing. Acabei por encontrar a Contraband – uma agencia de entretenimento a trabalhar no ramo dos eventos e com sede em Londres! Propus-me para estagiar com eles no Verao de 2013, mas como ja estavam com os lugares completos, nesse ano acabei por ir para um Resort na Madeira (o que tambem foi fantastico, claro!) mas combinei logo que voltaria a entrar em contacto com a Contraband.

E assim foi! Agora estou aqui, mas ja que se trata de um estagio nao remunerado e esta e, de facto, uma cidade muito cara, tive de arranjar maneira de viver gastanto o minimo possivel. O que mais poderia alguem que se auto-intitula como viajante fazer, se nao tentar encontrar uma cama num hostel em troca de algumas horas de trabalho semanais… J Enviei e-mails para todos os hostels que encontrei em Londres a explicar a minha proposta e obtive uma resposta do grupo YHA, uma associacao de hostels no Reino Unido. Tive uma entrevista por skype… et voila!

Posto isto, a minha rotiva durante os proximos 3 meses vai basear-se num estagio em full-time, na Contraband, e no meu trabalho part-time no hostel onde vivo – o YHA London Central, in Great Portland Street (que e mesmo muito muito central!!).


Viver num hostel de forma "permanente" e muito estranho, tenho de dizer. Mas e o maximo!! Trata-se de uma experiencia completamente diferente de passar ferias num hotel, enquanto backpacker. Sinto muito mais a necessidade de ter cuidado com tudo, ja que tambem la trabalho e porque quero manter a minha "casa" limpa e arrumada :P Por outro lado, ha a questao de se tratar de um dorm que partilho com outras 3 raparigas todos os dias. Neste momento tenho 2 estagiarias comigo - que tambem ficam durante bastante tempo - portanto o quarto torna-se um pouco mais "privado" e seguro... mas claro que ha sempre a quarta pessoa, que varia muito por se tratar de um hospede! De qualquer forma, o ambiente no hostel (como de costume!) vale muito muito a pena e oferece imeeeensas experiencias e historias para partilhar para sempre. :)
